Tapenum's Day: A Wampanoag Indian Boy in Pilgrim Times
Published in School & Library Binding by Scholastic (May, 1996)
Authors: Kate Waters, Russ Kendall, and Russell Kendall
Average review score:

Wonderful!
I am continually amazed at how children's books offer detail and insight into daily life that no stout history book can provide.

Writing the same review for the other two in this trilogy. Excellent all!

A GREAT BOOK!
Another great book by Kate Waters. This book shows the daily life of a Native American child during the time of the Pilgrims. This book goes great with Sarah Morton's Day and Samuel Eaton's Day. Also, check out On the Mayflower also by Kate Waters.

This is a wonderful book !
We are big fans of Kate Waters' books about the Pilgrims (Samuel Eaton's Day, Sarah Morton's Day and On the Mayflower). When we discovered "Tapenum's Day", we were thrilled ! I found the 'point of view' from a young Native American boy to be both fascinating and educational, as did my children. We enjoyed seeing this historically accuate slice of life, written from a balanced perspective. I think this wonderful book rounds out the collection, including the other four, that no study of the Pilgrims should be without.

Teach Yourself Windows 95 Programming in 21 Days
Published in Paperback by Sams (October, 1995)
Authors: Charles Calvert and Charlie Calvert
Average review score:

the best book to learn windows 95 programming
I want to get the program code in this book

It'll take more than 21 days, a LOT more...
This book teaches you the nitty-gritty old fashioned way of writing Windows C++ code. You learn how to code without frameworks (MFC or OWL). It's a lot tougher to learn, but you get a deeper understanding.

Good starting guide for Windows programming!
Topics were covered from a realistic and helpful prespective. The chapter projects helped to re-enforce the information covered in the chapter. Good incrementing from the basics to the more complex. Got me up and running and helped to separate the useless information from the useful information.

Ten Days to a Great New Life
Published in Paperback by Wilshire Book Co (June, 1982)
Author: William E. Edwards

MAGNIFY YOURSELF
I read this book in 1963 and have revisited it since. It is concise, well written, and if you follow the advice, very effective. The ten day plan is is excellent and I owe my climb to the top of my profession to following the guidelines. I believe you need to re-visit the book every year or two to ensure the habits suggested are kept and followed.

I have no connection with the author.

Deceptively Seeming Simply--- Really, Really POWERFUL BOOK!
I PROMISE that this book can REALLY CHANGE YOUR LIFE. It is an easy read. The ideas seem so simple. They are all so easy to do.

JUST TRY THEM, and you will see an IMMEDIATE difference in your life.

Reading this is the LUCKIEST thing that has happened to you this month, maybe this year. I promise. I have no vested interest.

As a regular guy, and as a Ph.D., i promise, promise, promise, get this book before its' gone.

It REALLY made an IMMEDIATE difference in my life.

This book works w/ simple, effective actions.
I first read this book in 1963, its 5th printing. The specific actions described in Mr. Edward's book will alter your life's goals and actions, not mention increase your wealth. I looked the book up here just to see if it were available. (It's a special order) The book is worth easily a thousand times what you will pay, because the 13 actions detailed in the book are almost effortless, but very effective. Unless you are a total couch potatoe, this book will, through its stories and illustrations, motivate you to take action on those techniques that appeal to you most. And at least some will. It is the one book I have held onto since I read it in 1963. It's a special order and I am not even sure Amazon.com can still get it, but get it if you can. BTW, I have no connection with the author or publisher. It's just one of the greatest self development books I ever read and USED.

These Latter Days
Published in Paperback by John F Blair Pub (June, 1998)
Author: Laura Kalpakian
Average review score:

Well written, like all of her books
Just as I said in the title - like all of Ms. Kalpakian's books, These Latter Days is a fascinating read. And I ended up naming my daughter after one of her characters - Eden - so this one is special to me :).

A very good read...
This is a very good, readable book. I found it well worth my time and money and intend to keep it as part of my library. J. A. Wiggins

Well-written, engrossing story
The tale of Ruth Mason Douglass and her children, and children's children, is an engrossing, well-written story. Ruth is a Mormon woman who is forced to defy her religious upbringing because of her need to flee the man she married. The book tells of her flight, her life afterwards, and the way her children grow up.

The characters in this book are three-dimensional. I was caught up in their lives from the very beginning. I shared their joy and sorrow. I was very sad to find I had reached the last page. I will read it again - this is the ultimate compliment from me.

Thirty Day Exercise Plan for Your Soul
Published in Paperback by HHJM, Inc. (02 January, 2001)
Author: Sandra Chappel Crume

Size Does Not Matter
What a wonderful book! Every day there is some fun excercise to help cure whatever spiritually ails you. Even though it is a small book, when you are through with the first 30 days, you can randomly pick a page every day after that and it never gets old. I cannot recommend this fun book enough.

GREAT FOR GIFT GIVING!
A friend of mine sent me this book, and after I looked through it, I decided to send it to many friends and family members. If we could all just laugh at life, like the author encourages to do, it would be so much easier going. Even being a guy, I can see the benefit of letting my inner child out to play every day. Do yourself a favor, and buy this book. And THEN! Follow the instructions!!

Seeker in Texas
I found Thirty Day Exercise Plan for Your Soul to be a very rewarding little book. It is filled with seemingly simple daily exercises that fit nicely into our busy days. Some of the these are just fun and some more inspirational-the interesting thing is they all come together to gently put a more positive spin on how you see the world, and how it reacts to you. It is a great little book for shaking off the blahs and stirring up more joy in your life.

Thirty Days: On Retreat With the Exercise of St. Ignatius
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (28 January, 2003)
Author: Paul L. Mariani
Average review score:

Inspiring and profound
I add this to my "favorites" bookshelf - until I read this, I believed Henri Nouwen's GENESEE DIARY would always remain my favorite, a book I reread every few years, as I think it captures the humaness of our spiritual search and growth, with all the inherent pitfalls and break-throughs. This book has inspired me even to the point that I too am now considering making the 30 day retreat - that is if I ever can resolve to do the necessary work such an adventure requires. I recommend it highly - and plan on rereading it soon, only this time, I will read the prescribed scriptures as Mariani did as he progressed through the retreat.

Superb writing and deep spiritual searching
I was very much impressed with this book on two levels. The writing is superb. Mr. Mariani has a wonderful, colorful, textured style of writing that adds beauty to what was already a wonderful topic. Boston College should be honored to have him on board. The spiritual content of the book based on the exercises of St. Ignatius is deeply powerful and only for the serious seeker of faith and service to God. The combination of the writing and the spiritual search make this book hard to put down once the first page is read.

Stunning, intense book
I have read this book twice, starting again as soon as I finished the first time, and still am amazed at its intensity. Dr. Mariani does a superb job detailing the days he spent practicing the Spiritual Exercises, conveying the process as well as anyone could to those of us who haven't lived through the retreat. Contrary to the editorial reviews above, it is not in any way boring, but to me, actually increases in interest as it progresses as I wanted to see what would next happen in his development. A thirty-day retreat is not possible for most of us, which may make it even more interesting to those who cannot take that much time from their regular jobs. The book has inspired me to delve more deeply into my Christian life and perhaps someday I will be able to do the 30 days too. Thank you for writing this book and for introducing me to Raymond Brown, one of the many benefits I received from reading it.

Thousand Hour Day
Published in Hardcover by Hippocrene Books (June, 1980)
Author: W.S. Kuniczak
Average review score:

BETRAYAL OF POLAND
Poland - a small country in the middle of Europe. Poland was always a key the West and the key to the East. Every aggressor in the history of the humanity went through Poland killing, burning, and raping leaving nothing but bleeding horror. Poland was almost never free.

A new war. A new aggressor called Hitler wants to conquer the East. Poland is in the way. A staged provocation and the whole world turns away in betrayal. Who cares of small nation being [torn] by two giants - Germany and the Soviet Union. Poland is ripped apart by Germany and by the Soviets. Millions of Poles and Jews are now convicted to death. Only a few heroes left are trying to escape the slaughter so they could come back later and fight another day.

One thousand hour day - one thousand hour war.

worth the wait
I owned this book for 30 years before I read it. Every time I thought of giving it away or donating it to a book sale, I reminded myself that I have always been interested in knowing more about the German invasion of Poland; the official beginning of WWII. I finally got around to reading it and it was worth the wait. I had to keep in mind that the author is a Pole and so I presumed that he would have a biased approach to history. That was OK for me because most historians just gloss over the Polish invasion leaving only a brief image of Polish calvary attacking German tanks. This novel challenges our perceptions of this event in history. The book describes chaos but it also describes successful Polish counterattacks and infliction of severe losses on the Germans. I had to look up some of the history of this campaign to see if such things really happened. The way the auther tells it, one might expect either side capable of victory. This IS a fascinating book and I found myself engrossed almost from the beginning. The main character is a Polish general who is politically out of favor at the start of the war but becomes a soberly insightful leader. If the book has a weak point, it is the character of the general's son, Adam. Exactly what the author was trying to capture with this character is confusing. It may be that he was to serve as a symbol of Poland as a hostage that no one (i.e.England and France) cared or knew about. Despite such distractions, the focus remains on Germany and Poland. I was beginning to wonder if the Soviet invasion was ever going to materialize in this version. I was three fourths finished with the book before the subject even came up. In general the characters are varied and well developed. The imagery is outstanding including and rape/murder early in the books that haunts the reader well after the novel is finished. This book is out of print and will likely remain so but if you can find a copy, it is well worth reading.

An amazing and wrenchingly emotional experience.
This book immediately brings to mind the breadth and depth of Dostoevsky. Set in 1939 as Poland is overrun by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, The Thousand Hour Day is filled with eminently believable characters and a sense of the despair and heroism of the time. Detractors might dismiss the book as an attempt to glamorize the Poles or Poland, but the book is far deeper than that. Kuniczak is a Pole who gives us a very real look at the conditions and emotions of the disaster, himself being the son of a Polish officer who fought in the September War. Kuniczak's prose is terse and pointed, but surprisingly effective at painting verbal pictures, whether he be describing a hunter looking for a man-killing bear in a quiet forest or the vicious innuendo leveled at a General's mistress during a high society party. The characters in the novel are representative, but embued with enough quality and depth that you begin to feel them personally. Certainly not a book for everyone, but a treasure for lovers of history and tense drama; this packs a full punch of both.

Tom and Pippo's Day (Pippo)
Published in Hardcover by Little Simon (February, 1989)
Author: Helen Oxenbury
Average review score:

Lovely
I love the wonderful illustrations in "Tom & Pippo." Messy playrooms, mommy and daddy snoring with their mouths open, the soft-boiled egg dripping on the tablecloth.

Their's much more than just a story about Tom's day or his friendship with Pippo for my son and I to talk about, as Oxenbury's simple and sweet writing let you explore what she *hasn't* said.

I know this by heart, which is good, because my son has worn the words right off the pages!

Tom & Pippo's Day
My son loves all the Tom & Pippo books and we have all the ones that are still in print! I recommend any of these Tom & Pippo books by Helen Oxenbury as they are very sweet and perfect bedtime reading for toddlers and preschool ages. I wish she would write more as I enjoy the little simple but adorable story lines as well!

Endearing story of friendship
This book beautifully communicates the friendship a toddler feels for his favorite stuffed toy. My daughter loves this book -- she's not even one year old but the instant I say "Do you want to read Pippo with me?" she is happy and eager to help turn the pages. Few things entertain her for more than a few minutes (except, of course, my dog's food dish) but she will sit and listen to this book as often as I will read it. It's a very short book but the effect upon her is consistently magical. I cannot say enough good things about it, but I must stop typing regardless -- I've got to go order more "Tom and Pippo" books for my daughter.

Tony's Hard Work Day
Published in Hardcover by Gibbs Smith Publisher (October, 2002)
Authors: Alan Arkin and Annmarie Infanger
Average review score:

A really good book.
I read this book at school. I was impressed by the language. The day before I read this book I found out that the author wrote this book about his three sons.

My favorite book as a child
This was my favorite book when I was little. Now that I'm a father, I can't seem to find my copy (I managed to keep it for 20+ years, but I may have just had one move too many), so I was sad to see it was out of print.

Hopefully it will turn up, because this book is a real gem.

Don't Miss This One
I was given this book when I was a little girl and it instantly became one of my favorite books which I still keep in my library today. The book is wildly imaginative and teaches children that limits only exist in your own mind, certainly not in the minds of others. It's a shame that this book is no longer in print because it's truly timeless. If you see it anywhere grab a copy and then torture yourself by giving it away to a child that's dear to you.

Traditional Hopi Kachinas: A New Generation of Carvers
Published in Hardcover by Northland Pub (April, 1900)
Author: Jonathan S. Day
Average review score:

Kachinas and Hopi 101
On a recent trip to Arizona -Sedona and Flagstaff, I was lucky to stumble upon a Hopi Marketplace, meet Jonathan Day and a number of the carvers in his book. This book is a wonderful beginning to the understanding the culture of the Hopi and the direction in which the creation of Kachinas is moving--a return to an art form that is based upon the teachings of the Hopi--a truer sense of the meaning of the kachina as a spirit which teaches and guides. Written with sensitivity and humour, Jonathan Day's book imparts the direction and meaning of the kachina, the Hopi culture and the artists behind the work. His commitment to the trust given to him by many of the artists interviewed along with his knowledge of the Hopi culture is invaluable to those of us of wish to understand more with respect and honor. His advice and recommended reading is invaluable.

A beautiful book about traditional katsinas and the carvers.
Author, Jonathan Day has created a feast for the eyes as well as the mind. Day, a second generation Indian trader, shares his love and respect for the Hopi people while introducing the reader to the traditional Hopi katsina (kachina)through a new generation of carvers. Most people are familiar with the "action" dolls, however, traditional katsinas are usually hung on the wall and have an "antique" look to them. As this is my favorite form of katsina I was immediately drawn to this book. JD shares his experiences with the 19 featured carvers and provides a wonderful insight to what guides them in their carving...many of the stories will touch your heart. An essential book to anyone who collects or has dreamed of collecting Hopi katsina dolls.

A very good book!
This book deals with the "new" style of katsina doll carving that is in fact a revival of what is termed "traditional" style, the style found before the advent of "action" katsinas of the 1950's. The author has termed this new/old style "New Traditional", and has devoted this book to the carvers themselves, as well as the dolls they make. These katsinas are identified by their more simplistic style, with emphasis on the faces and body paint and costume, much different than the very elaborately carved and detailed "Modern Contemporary" dolls. Many of the Hopi artists in this book have been carving katsinas for years, but have only recently begun to carve in the old style of their grandfathers. The book describes what the categories of katsinas are, gives a biography of the featured carvers, the locations where their awesome dolls may be purchased, and even has an introduction on how to behave yourself if you are ever privileged enough to visit the Hopi mesas in Arizona (sadly, many of the Hopi ceremonies have been closed to outsiders because of rude, obnoxious behavior of tourists who think that these important religious rites are just shows put on for entertainment). This is a good book for collectors of katsina dolls, and even if this style of katsina carving isn't quite your cup of tea, I recommend this book very highly!
